Phillipians 3:3- For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
We know that in our flesh, there is no good thing. Thanks be to God that due to the new birth, we are now able to walk in the Spirit. For in the Spirit, is only good things. Paul would continue on in listing in particular the fleshly things that he would no longer glory in.
Philippians 3:5- Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law a Pharisee; Concerning zeal, persecuting the church, touching righteousness which is in the law, blameless.
In this verse Paul is saying that keeping the law of God didn't cut it. Neither was it important to prove where he was from and what tribe he came out of. He was an expert in the law of God, a Pharisee of the pharisees. He was also zealous for God, (not according to knowledge of course). So zealous was he that he persecuted the church because he thought they were blaspheming the name of the Lord. Paul was righteousness and even blameless, yet this did not cut it either.
Philippians 3:7- But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.
All the things that mattered to Paul then meant nothing when Christ came into his life. May we all feel the same way. May we eliminate those things which get in our way of serving the one true God. May study out and spend more time with Christ to see who he truly is. May we seek out what he truly taught. This is a tough task but when we get it, we'll count the things of old for loss for Christ.
