Mercy and Truth

Proverbs 3:3-4- Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck and write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

How can mercy and truth forsake the individual, seeing that mercy and truth are things that are given to us by God? It seems like we forsake them by not giving them to others. Christ would rebuke the Scribes and Pharisees for doing this very thing: Matthew 23:23- Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the others undone. We see they were rebuked for not just leaving off mercy in their teachings, but judgment and faith as well, which includes truth. So then we must not leave these off either. We are supposed to give mercy for if we give it, we shall obtain it (Mat 5:7). We should also never neglect to give or tell truth. Mercy and truth should be close to us, as close as a necklace is to flesh. And when we should be willing to remove it from our necks and give it to others, for we know that God has an endless supply and will return to us what we have given. Mercy and truth should be a part of us. Written on our hearts, warning us when error approaches. With it comes a double blessing. Having favor with God, ah what a good place to be and to have it with man as well, what a blessing. So then may we always be reading God's word, searching for more truth, and be willing to give both mercy and truth to those that are in need of it.
