Filled with the Spirit or Drunk as a Skunk?
Filled with the Spirit or Drunk as a Skunk?

Filled with the Spirit or Drunk as a Skunk?

In the book of first Samuel, Hannah prays for a child.

1st Samuel 1:13-15- Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken. And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from before thee. And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD.

We see Hannah crying out to the Lord within herself. Her lips move, yet nothing comes out. Eli perceives her to be drunk but she was far from it. We see a similar take on the day of Pentecost where the Holy Spirit was poured out and they spoke in other tongues. Some rejoiced, yet some thought this:

Acts 2:13- Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine.

So then, we must be careful. We see that being overwhelmed by the Spirit can have the appearance of one who is drunk, if perceived carnally. Having this awareness can lead to us quenching the Spirit, causing us to hold back in these moments. We must rejoice when we are filled with the Spirit and if it shows outwardly, so be it. We too must not be deceived in thinking that if we do get drunk on wine or strong drink that this is the Spirit of God. It most certainly is not. It is a strange spirit; and yes, this is why you see the word "spirits" on most liquor stores signs. This spirit is not of God and we must not be fooled into thinking it is. And this is why Paul wrote this to the church in Ephesus:

Ephesians 5:18- And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

In Christ,
